April 26th, You Can Never be too Thin, or Can You?

Just to be clear, I’m not talking about my weight here- I’m referring to my scarf.

As you can see by this scarf on the right- being too thin can actually be a problem.

The scarf looks awkward and doesn’t really make any sense.

I have a few girlfriends who refuse to wear scarves- and I honestly wonder if it’s because they haven’t found the right one yet!

As you can see on the left, this bright orange scarf not only is a lot thicker than the one on the right, but is also has amazing texture due to elastic thread, giving the scarf some bulk and some interest.

Now it’s the focal part of my outfit, instead of a distraction.

When you are out shopping and you see a scarf- try it on! Loop it around your head twice and see if there is enough fabric to still tie it. I have turned down many amazing scarves because they are too thin- or not long enough.

A few more suggestions, i.e.: Β note to self:

You might also want to get rid of your plain white long sleeved t shirts, and mom jeans…

There, now isn’t that better?

This t shirt has a cool hemline- and it's long enough to cover my bum, which is perfect since I'm wearing skinny jeans (in a very dark blue wash).

Jeans: Anthropologie, Shirt: H&M, Scarf: Boutique in Queen Anne (Seattle)

  1. I’m curious: Are all bootcut jeans considered “mom jeans” or does it depend on the color/cut? My hips/thighs are my problem areas and, inspired by your blog, I tried a pair of skinny jeans at Old Navy the other day. They looked great from the knee down, but distractingly bad across the widest part of my body. The only way to hide it would be a super long shirt (almost dress). Should I stick with bootcut to balance my body or try the long shirt look, which I fear will make my legs look short since I am only 5′-5″?

    1. Hi Maureen! Thanks so much for commenting. No, not all boot cut are considered Mom Jeans! To me, Mom jeans are high waisted, huge pockets on the rear and usually in a horrible blue color. For examples (at the bottom of the page) click here: http://everydaymomstyle.com/2012/03/01/march-1st-goodwill-hunting/

If you are more comfortable wearing bootcut than skinny’s- that is great. Just be sure to get a really dark wash and wear them with heels (or wedges). Another alternative is straight leg- which won’t be so tight all over. If you looked really wide across your middle- it could have been the shirt. Look back to my post from Monday- I looked wide in the middle because I had on a very loose top and a boxy jacket. They did nothing for me.

I would also suggest going to a speciality shop to have an experienced salesperson help you. You might end up spending over $100 for a pair of jeans- but if you think about it as something you will wear everyday- it might be worth the investment. Personally, I think a great pair of jeans are essential to the stylish mom’s wardrobe.

Good luck and let me know how you do!
By the way, I am only 5’5″ and I don’t think my legs look short.

      1. Wow, you are 5′-5″? I would have guessed taller. Just goes to show that your style strategies really do give you a taller, leaner appearance! I have only recently started following your blog – have you ever done an “inside my closet” post so readers can see how big your wardrobe is and how you organize everything?

      2. I have never done a peek into my closet- except when I did my 30 for 30 back in December, but that was just a small glimpse of the 30 clothes I had picked for the month. I need to do a major closet clean out/ organization before I let anyone in… I’m fortunate in that I have a large walk in closet- but because of that, it is a total mess! Thanks for the suggestion though- it will motivate me to do a clean out!

  2. Love, love, love the scarf – but of course, orange is one of my favorite colors! And it’s such a happy color on a gray day ! Did you get my reply yesterday about the sunshine image? I replied but wonding if you did not see it or if my suggestion did not work… Have a great day πŸ™‚

    1. Hi! Thanks for your comment! I did not see your response, sorry! I did try to copy the image and then paste it on to my blog, but it won’t work. Do you have the code for it? I work in WordPress, so it can sometimes be a bit tricky as well. It’s funny, I have learned so much more about my computer from blogging as well!

By the way, Happy Anniversary! 20 years! Wow! You were a beautiful bride!

      1. Thank you πŸ™‚ Did you try right clicking and “save as” to your computer? thats how I did it. otherwise i can try and figure out how to email it to you? if you like. It’s such a bright picture I like seeing it πŸ™‚

  3. I like the thin scarf, but no, not with that outfit.
I have passed on the ABC Award your way !…..oh, try right clicking and saving the shortcut or if you can go into Properties and copy the url and then should be able to go to Dashboard, Appearance, then Widget section and paste into an “Image” to your page.

  4. I’m also one of those girls who still have to learn to be braver in trying on scarfs… partly because I think I have ‘short’ neck :P.

Speaking of jeans, I’m only 5’3″, but found straight and skinny jeans from H&M works well for me πŸ™‚
