I really love wearing dresses, especially in the summer. They are such an easy outfit! But in the fall/ winter I struggle a bit because I worry about getting cold. So today I am showing a denim dress that I have styled to not only look cute, but to also keep me warm!
My first step was my shoes. These tall boots can be worn with knee socks, which definitely add major warmth. If it’s really chilly, some neutral tights will also work. Next I added this long cardigan. I’ve shown this cardigan a lot as a ‘before’ look- because it can tend to look like a bathrobe, but paired with this dress, I think it looks cozy. My infinity scarf completes the outfit- it adds color, warmth and style. All in all, a cute fall look perfect for school.
ps: If you want to see some of the Netflix/ Amazon Video recommendations from yesterday, head over to Instagram @Everydaymomstyle_ to check out what people were saying! I loved hearing from readers- and am excited to check out Killing Eve, You, Derry Girls to name a few! Thank you!! 🙂
It’s funny, whenever I do a post on shoes I get more comments than usual. I think it’s because so many of us suffer from foot (or back) issues- and we know how incredibly important it is to wear comfortable shoes.
To be honest, I get so tired of seeing other mom blogs with pictures of moms in stilettos. To me, that just doesn’t seem practical or reasonable. There is NO WAY I would (or could) wear those!
Yes, on days when I work I sometimes wear heels- but I am uncomfortable most of the day and rip those babies off as soon as I walk in the door of my house (and immediately put on my beloved Birkenstocks! LOL)
So anyway, after that rant I thought you all might like to see more options for cute shoes that are also comfortable and realistic for moms!
These are made by Clark and can be found here! They can be worn with socks (which is nice in the winter), or tights and would look great with jeans (as long as they are NOT wide leg). Opt for straight leg, or better yet- skinny or boyfriend style!
Here is another style option, the Oxford.
These can be found here. Oxfords can also be worn with socks (as long as they are very low profile and can’t be seen), but are cuter with bare feet. Pair these with jeans (rolled at the ankle to look cute), or skirts.
Another cute style of shoe, the driver (or loafer as some people call them), which can be found here. These don’t work with socks- but are a cute substitute to ballet flats. They can be worn with anything as seen below in this great collage by The Glitter Guide.
A great alternative to my Puma’s are Chuck Taylors- these are super sporty and also really cute with jeans rolled at the ankle. They can be worn with socks but make sure they are very low profile.
Another cute, option- (also similar to the Pumas) are made by Clark and can be found here.
This is a brand I’ve never heard of before, Ahnu. They can be found here:
I could do this all day- there are a lot of options out there! My point is, don’t be fooled by pictures of Hollywood stars (or other mom style blogs) strutting around in their crazy high heels, believe me- they are wishing they could wear comfy shoes like us sensible moms! 🙂
By the way, if I missed a shoe that you want to share, please let me know!
I apologize- I am lacking in creativity this week- not only in my titles (‘Cream Sweater’- come on, surely you can do better than that?) but also in my outfits..
I think I’m suffering from jet lag- or writer’s block- or maybe there’s just too much on my mind.
Is anyone else a bit Christmas crazy at this time of year? Yesterday I made a spreadsheet of all that I need (or want) to do this time of year. And truth be told- getting it all down on paper (ahem, Excel) actually made me feel better.
But back to my outfit, I’m wearing another tried and true one today. I am really into this look this fall/ winter (bet you figured that out already).
I love the classic, polished look of a checked shirt peeking out under a cable knit sweater paired with skinny jeans and boots. It’s simple, stylish and totally me!
Be careful though- your sweater should be fitted- not loose and baggy like the look on the right. I also prefer the dark skinny jeans as opposed as the loose boyfriend style on the right (I love this style, but these are a just a little off).
No time to write today, I’m rushing out the door for yet another basketball tournament!
I can’t decide which shoes to wear… I like the all black look on the left- they make my legs look longer, but then again the brown boots on the right are a fun alternative!
What do you think?
I love this oversize sweater, it’s so cozy!
Sometimes it’s fun to mix brown and black together!
Here’s a little trick I thought I’d share- in case you hadn’t seen it before!
I can’t claim it as my own idea as I’ve seen many gals on blogs do this-which is why I titled my post un-original!
Rather than let this little summer dress sit in my closet unworn for 3 seasons, I’ve transitioned it to a fall piece by layering a sweater over the top. I then added my light brown Target boots and a belt to emphasize my waist. To complete the look (and follow my ‘rule of 3’) I’ve added a necklace.
For you newer readers, my ‘rule of 3’ is that I feel like the top half of my outfits must always have 3 elements to it. In this case, the sweater (1), the belt (2) and the necklace (3). It isn’t a hard and fast rule- but one that I usually try to stick to.
And, for you gals who hate wearing belts (ahem, Erin I’m talking to you)… here is the look minus the belt.
I think it still works even without the belt, don’t you?
This outfit is really comfy- and casual- I could wear it anywhere!
Ok gals- I want to hear from you- belt or no belt?! Please comment!
It’s been a while, so I thought I’d link to Pleated Poppy for What I Wore Wednesday. Be sure to check it out, there are literally hundreds of ideas!
Dress: Old Navy, Sweater: Banana Republic, Boots: Target, Belt: so old I honestly can’t rememeber!, Necklace: Stella and Dot
Sorry about the dreadful lighting- it was still dark outside when I took these photos.
Well, I’ve done it again- I’ve dressed head to toe in Target! I started my outfit with this cute denim shirtdress I bought at Target over the summer.
Then I decided to add a puffy vest (these are very in right now- plus they add warmth- plus the bright red adds a nice contrast color to my outfit).
I then decided to switch out the denim belt that came with the dress for this cute multicolored skinny one, lastly I opted for my light brown boots!
Before I knew it, I realized that each item I selected was from Target… how about that?
A close up of the belt.
Originally I wanted to wear these booties with this outfit- but realistically, I can’t imagine being in heels all day today (I’ll be on my feet most of the day!).
Perfect for work, running errands, going to lunch… whatever your day has in store for you!
Don’t be surprised if this becomes a weekly feature.
One thing I like about doing these type of posts is that it shows how versatile your wardrobe can be.
Hopefully it reminds people that by investing in a few good pieces you will able to create more outfits than having a closet full of random things.
Today’s look is based on my favorite dress. I can’t tell you how much I love this dress- and part of the reason is because it is so warm! The long sleeves make all the difference in the world! The cotton is super soft, super stretchy, so it glides over my curves and is not restrictive at all!
In my first look- on the right- the dress is worn plain, paired with these brown boots. In my opinion, this is a little too dull for me. The dress needs a focal point, and the boots are off. Maybe they are too short? Not sure what is wrong exactly.
On the left I have added leggings (to make me even warmer), a black belt and a cute raspberry scarf. My open toe espadrilles finish the look.
Love this bright scarf! I would recommend looking in the mirror and making sure the leggings are even before walking out the door! Mine are a little off! LOL!
For my next look, I’ve removed the scarf and added this cute jersey cotton blazer.
This blazer has proven to be a very versatile piece. Best part is I got it at Khol’s.
Here I have on a grey flannel blazer, tights and boots. A much more wintery look. The bright necklace adds a nice touch of color.
This cute green polka dot cardigan is a both a fun color addition and fun pattern mixing. I’m still not crazy about the boots though.
Here I have paired it with brown- adding a brown belt, boots and purse. Blue and brown are an unusual color combo- but it works. I would skip the ugly grey tights next time!
I’ve chosen this purple open cardigan- it adds interest, texture and another unexpected color. The shoes are a stretch for me… but maybe it you are daring!
Here is another winter version. I’ve decided to turn the dress into a skirt by adding a turtleneck over it. Boots and leggings keep me warm as well. Looking at the photo- I’m not crazy about the stripes going in both directions. If I had a solid sweater it would look a lot better.
Push up the sleeves, ditch the heavy tights and add strappy sandals and a chunky necklace- and you’re all set for spring.
Love this bright scarf! I would recommend looking in the mirror and making sure the leggings are even before walking out the door! Mine are a little off! LOL!
Dress: Nordstrom, Michael Kors

Thank you so much for all the sweet comments from yesterday! I was so surprised and flattered that people took the time to write and tell me to feel better! Wow! What a supportive and great community this blogging world is!
Thank you!~
I am feeling so much better today, but unfortunately now my son has it. ARGH! I guess it’s going around- many of my neighbors said they have it too.
So- today’s outfit is not really what I am wearing- I’m actually still in my jammies- but I took a photo over the weekend of a potential outfit, so I thought I’d show it.
I’ve shown this picture on the right before- but it was a while ago, so I thought I could show it again. This was me- a year ago (before my style project!)
I see lots of moms wearing outfits like this- and while they will definitely stay dry- it’s not that stylish.
On the left I have re-created the same idea- jeans (or in this case black skinny jeans), boots, a waterproof jacket. I’ve gotten rid of these horrid pink rain boots and replaced them with my Frye’s. They technically aren’t rainboots- but I sprayed on a treatment so that they are water repellent, and it’s not like I’m going to be standing in the rain.
My jacket isn’t technically a rain jacket either- but again- this outfit isn’t for a soccer game- this is for running errands- darting in and out of the car on a wet or gloomy day. Plus, isn’t that what umbrellas are for?
This jacket will keep me warm and dry- and the style is much more current than the bright blue raincoat. A nice snuggly warm turtleneck also helps keep me toasty.
It’s got the ‘rocker chic’ vibe to it, which I’ve discovered is my alter ego! Who knew?
Have a great day and stay healthy! As my mom always says- ‘wash your hands often!’
I had to run to the store today to get some children’s Tylonal so I had to take off my jammies and actually get dressed. I decided this Burberry rain jacket would be even better than the motorcycle style jacket I originally showed. This was a gift from my hubby a few years ago. I love it, it is a classic look that will never go out of style.
This Burberry raincoat is a more stylish alternative than the blue rain jacket!
