Oct 29, Mom Jeans

I’ve been wanting a pair of straight leg mom jeans for a while now- and I actually bought a pair at Target about a month ago, but never really felt comfortable wearing them. Something was just off. Then I decided to splurge and get the Madewell ones that I kept seeing on Instagram. So today I am showing you the difference between the two.

As you can see, the Madewell ones are a tad longer on me- which actually makes big difference. The legs are also straighter- there is some weird bunching going on in the Target ones. The Madewell ones also are VERY high waisted- I mean above my belly button high, which may take some getting used to! One thing to keep in mind is that the sizing is way off! I am normally a 28 in most brands, in these I am in a 26, which makes me think what size are the skinny girls wearing?!

I’ve paired my mom jeans with a cute J Crew button down blouse that I tied at the waist and then for warmth added a green jacket. The pointy booties are more current than the worn out loafers.

Oct 12th, Casual Friday

For most people, Friday is a casual day- so I wanted to show an outfit that is casual- but I still looks like I put a little effort into my look.

In my outfit on the right I am wearing jeans, a t shirt and a jacket. It’s a common look I see moms wearing all the time- and let’s face it-  there is really nothing very cute about this look!

To improve the outfit, I replaced the casual t shirt for a cute checkered shirt– then I added a gorgeous cable knit sweater over the top. I like seeing the collar, sleeves and the tails of the shirt peeking out under the sweater (this look was inspired by Dreaming in Cashemere’s cute outfit seen here).

For my jeans I have on these straight leg, dark wash J Crew cropped jeans- and I have replaced my Birks (I do wear these around the house) with black patent flats.

As for the finishing pieces, I decided this sweater has so much detail that I felt like it didn’t need a necklace, but I added a cute black bracelet.

It’s basically the same style outfit as my before look- but so much cuter, don’t you think?

By the way, thank you so much to everyone who took a minute to write yesterday! I loved hearing from everyone what their opinion was on my outfit! I think you all have great points- and I love hearing from you!

Be sure to check in tomorrow when I am going to be answering all my reader’s questions! If you’ve ever wondered anything about me- here is your chance to have your question answered. Email me at: everydaymomstyle@gmail.com

Sept 26th, Living in My Car!

Some days I feel like I live in my car.

Yesterday I left my house at 3:30- got home at 7:00- and all I was doing was driving kids from one sporting event to the next (pick up from tennis, drive to basketball practice, drive to soccer game…). Over scheduled much?

Argh! On days like these I want to be dressed super comfy- and ready for anything,

Today’s outfit is a good example of that. It’s an easy outfit for running around town in- it’s casual & comfy- yet looks pulled together.

I like the look of the shirt tails peeking out- and I love the cable knit detail on this sweater- I even decided to skip a necklace and let the sweater speak for itself.

As for my jeans- these are my old favorites! They are Diva style from Old Navy (which I’m not sure if they are still making this style- these are old). They are straight leg jeans in a shorter length that I simply roll up to make them look cropped. They are the perfect casual jeans for running errands in!

Sept 11th, Inspired by Friends

Do you have super stylish friends whose style you’d like to copy?

I do!

I swear, sometimes I feel like such a joke having a style blog when I look around at all my friends and realize they are FAR more stylish than I am.

For example, I had a friend over the other day- and she looked adorable- I should have taken her picture, but I didn’t. Darn!

Instead I went to pinterest to find pictures of what she was wearing! See below:

She had on skinny jeans, a black and white polka dot J crew top and a bright green cardigan accessorized by these gorgeous Stella and Dot earrings.

I decided to try to copy her look- but using items I already have in my closet. My look isn’t as cute as hers, but at least it inspired me to combine a few pieces I already own and wear them in a totally new way.

Because I’m working today, I chose gray skinny pants instead of jeans, then I added my black and white checked shirt and a bright green cardigan. My shoes are not nearly as stylish- but I have to be on my feet all day today, so these Puma’s will have to do.

If you’re looking for inspiration- check out Pinterest– there are literally millions of ‘friends’ for you to be inspired by!

August 30th, Daisy Dukes (NOT!)

I bought this cute red and white checked shirt at Old Navy at the start of the summer- thinking it would be a fun 4th of July shirt. However, with temperatures in the 100’s (I was in Kansas over the 4th) there was no way I was wearing this… so it has sat in the back of my closet ever since.

Today I decided to bust it out. I layered it over a white tank and then paired it with my dark J Crew cropped pencil jeans, for shoes I opted for these cute sandals from Target. I know- these sandals offer absolutely no support- but I knew I wasn’t going to be on my feet much today- so I decided to go for it!

As for my before picture… please know that I would NEVER actually wear this outfit- I took this picture to make a point.

When wearing a shirt like this, you might be tempted to go all Daisy Duke and knot your shirt at the waist and pair it with denim cutoffs.

Please don’t!

Surely the picture on the right says it all!  This doesn’t look sexy, or hip or young… it looks like a sad, desperate attempt to look young.

If you are over 40, you really shouldn’t be wearing denim cutoff’s* (or actually any denim short in my opinion) any more. Opt for a cute denim skirt instead… or cropped jeans (just make sure they are cropped at the ankle and NOT the mid calf).

Dress classy instead of trashy… there you have it, I sound like my mother again today. I guess that’s a good thing!

By the way, it’s my sister’s b day today and I want to wish her happy day. Your card is going to be late. Sorry.

I decided to try it tucked in as well for a little more polished look (but then I have to suck in my tummy all day. UGH!)

* I suppose if you are going to the beach you could wear your denim cut off’s… but a cute swim suit coverup would be more appropriate.

June 2nd, Red, White and Blue

I used to avoid wearing the colors red, white and blue together for fear of looking too patriotic.

Silly, I know.

Especially since these colors are meant to be together. They are so complimentary, so classic and so perfect!

Today’s outfit is based around my red jeans.

Originally, I paired them with this beige/ gray t shirt with the ruffle detail down the middle and my denim jacket. Although I liked this look at first- looking at the pictures, it seems a little blah. And I always struggle with the half tuck- it never looks right on me!

I then decided to pair it with my blue and white checked shirt- layered over a white tank- and then rolled the sleeves up a bit.

It’s a more stylish look- and I love the way the dark blue in the checks is complimented by the dark wash on the jacket.

I like the sleeves rolled up- a much ‘cooler’ look!

Jan 3rd, Liar Liar

I’ve titled this post ‘Liar, Liar’ because just 2 short days after I declared I would no longer be buying items from Old Navy- I go and buy this sweater.

Let me explain.

My son is really into skinny jeans- and Old Navy was having a denim sale ($10 for kids jeans), so while we were in there, I spotted this sweater.

I decided I might as well try it on, and sure enough, I LOVE it!

That being said, I have paired it with more expensive items- like these cute cargos and this checkered shirt- so I’m not completely going against what I said the other day. Just a tiny bit…

I probably don’t even need to talk about the outfit on the right- in fact my husband took one look at me and said ‘you would NEVER wear that!’. But I like showing before and after pictures. And I swear, I really see women who dress like this. The buttoned up cardigan, the tennis shoes… not to be mean, but it looks wrong.
Wouldn’t you agree that this sweater on the left is much cuter than a traditional cardigan?
Now I need to figure out if I like tucked- or untucked… what do you think?

Is untucked too messy? I feel like a college student!

I felt like the cable knit was detail enough, and decided to skip adding a necklace.

Nov 18th, TGIF

Another week under my belt, and can I say TGIF?! It’s been a LONG week! I don’t know about you- but my kiddos have been driving me nuts, is that bad?! I think I’m ready for my vacation!

If you’ve been reading this for a while, you may have noticed that I seem to really like the classic, preppy look!

On the right I’m showing one example, but it doesn’t quite work. Although this jacket is cute- the collar is a little too large, and the cotton fabric (it’s like sweat shirt material) wrinkles so easily that it looks messy.

On the left I’m showing an improved version. Even though there was nothing wrong with the plain blue shirt from the right- to add a little interest and pattern, I’ve decided to go with this cute checked shirt. I’m wearing it under my blue blazer, which looks more polished.

I also have on my new favorite skinny jeans- Skinny Skinny by Madewell. These are incredibly comfy and they were around $100, which I think is reasonable (think price per wear- I wear my skinnys at least twice a week). They have so much stretch in them and the cotton is so soft, it is honestly like wearing sweat pants! Heaven!

I’ve finished the whole look off with my brown boots. Now, is it too soon for Happy Hour?!

I decided to tuck in my shirt for a cleaner look.

For a more casual look I think this shirt is cute enough to stand on it's own.

August 30th, A Checkered Past

White tank and unbuttoned blouse add a little style to this look

Checkered shirt left untucked is a little plain.

Today I decided I needed a little color, so I chose this cute checkered shirt I just bought from Land’s End. In the left side picture, I left it untucked and un- accessorized.
In the picture on the right, I added a white tank under the shirt, unbuttoned a few buttons and added a chunky necklace and belt. I think this looks much better, don’t you?

Just the right amount of tank showing ads a little sex appeal. My grocer will be thrilled! Hah!
