March 22, Bomber Jacket

I am a big fan of jackets. I own a LOT of them. I think they are the perfect item to add to any outfit to keep warm.

First off, I love the jacket on the left. It’s an olive green field/ military style jacket. Paired with the right top and jeans, it can be a cute outfit, like when I wore it here. However, today, this look is not doing much for me.

So I replaced the field jacket with this cute olive bomber (similar) This jacket is made out of Tencel, which if you aren’t familiar with it- you should be. It is made of wood pulp (earth friendly) and is one of the softest fabrics out there. So comfortable to wear! If you are thinking about buying a jacket to add to your wardrobe- consider getting a green bomber. The color is a great neutral that can be worn with everything- and it is a stylish alternative to a cardigan.

I then replaced the high neck white tee shirt with this cute scoop neck tank. Working with the casual vibe, I switched out the black jeans for my ripped/ ankle length pair and then slipped on my black and grey tennis shoes instead of the heavy black boots. To complete the outfit, I threw on this fun necklace that adds a little interest.

Jeans- Zara

Tank- Gap

Jacket- Kenneth Cole

Shoes- Vince, Nordstrom Rack

August 28th, Let Me Introduce Myself

Hello Friends!

For any of you new readers out there, I wanted to quickly introduce myself. My name is Megan and I’m a married mom of 2 kids. We live in a suburb of Seattle- so my style is very Pacific Northwest!

I started this blog a year ago in order to document my daily outfit. It was a fun way for me to learn about what works and what doesn’t.

Please note that I, by no means, consider myself a fashion expert!

I simply love clothes- but I love easy, comfortable, normal clothes- that real moms can wear!

I know it’s not high fashion! I just want to look nice every day- and so this blog helps keep me be accountable for that.

Ok, that being said- here is my outfit for today. (Truth be told, I actually wore this the other day – when it was super hot!.)

All I’ve done is pair a blue tank with a blue and white striped skirt. Pretty basic, right?!

Not really- this is a fairly full skirt and with the tank untucked, it makes me look large in the hips/ tummy areas.  However, by tucking my tank in- and wearing heels instead of flats- I’ve slimmed my waist and elongated my legs by several inches. (Wouldn’t you rather look long legged than long waisted?)

Let me tell you about these heels. I normally am not comfortable in heels. I prefer flats- but these heels are truly one of the most comfortable pair of shoes I’ve ever owned. The brand is Naot and the are somewhat expensive- but they are worth every penny. I could wear these for 12 hours (in fact I have) and my feet and back don’t ache at all!

Also notice that the color of the heels is close to my skin tone- which helps with making my legs look longer. Now look at the dark brown sandals- just the color alone draws attention to my feet and the ankle strap literally cuts my foot off from my leg- making them look shorter.

So, if you are a flat girl- but want to try a comfy heel- consider trying Naot. The style is a little bit more fashionable than Dansko’s (although my Dansko sandals are awesome too!).

There you have it, my tips for the day! Tuck in your shirt (didn’t your mom always tell you that?) and don’t be afraid to try a wedge heel!

March 15th, Sister’s Style

My sisters and I all have our unique style- it’s very similar- but there are a few distinct differences.

My older sister, Erin, has a larger top than bottom, so her goal is to hide her top and flaunt her thin legs.

Her favorite look is skinny bottoms, large oversize tops or coats and flats.

Today she is wearing jeans, a sweater with a cute cable collar and then this wonderful coat.

The pattern is eye catching, the length of the coat is perfect to hide her butt and her legs look nice and thin. She’s finished her look with her favorite boots from Frye.

Kara is what I would call a preppy/ traditionalist. Her look is very simple and very classic. Most of her wardrobe is from J Crew.

You’ll never catch her looking like she’s trying too hard. Her look is current, but not uber trendy and definitely not outside her comfort zone.

Today she is wearing skinny jeans. She’s paired them with this blue and grey striped top with these cool dolman sleeves. It’s an easy outfit, which translates to effortless style.

Her shoes take the whole look up a notch, they are grey suede wedge heels. Gorgeous!

My style is similar to Kara’s, but I mix brands up a bit more. I like combining pieces from Target, Khol’s, J Crew and Nordstrom to create a more affordable outfit. I also might be a bit more of a risk taker- just a little edgier by adding things like my faux fur vest, or maybe a huge necklace or leopard flats… something that is unexpected.

Truth be told, both of my sisters are huge fashion influences on me. They always look amazing and they are one of the reasons I even started this blog. I would go visit them and always feel like my style was so lame compared. They inspired me to re-think my closet and put more effort into my look. Thanks guys! I love you!

So, which sister is most like you? Erin, Kara or me?

Love this orange top with the dolman sleeves.

Love this pattern on her coat.

I love the bright color- makes me think of spring… if only!

March 1st, Goodwill Hunting

I went to the Goodwill the other day for a little ‘market research’.

I decided that I’d try on a few pairs of ‘mom jeans’ to demonstrate  how the cut and style of jeans can make a HUGE difference.

Don’t believe me? See the pictures at the bottom of the page.

What surprised me was that there were so many pairs of designer jeans there. OMG! Who knew?

If you know the cut and style that best flatters your figure, I’d suggest try looking at the Goodwill. I saw Nordstrom (Calson), Michael Kors, Citizens of Humanity, GAP and so on… I was truly amazed.

If you don’t know the best style for your figure, I wouldn’t suggest the Goodwill just yet. Go to department store and ask for help. An experienced salesperson should be able to help find the perfect pair.

Now, on to today’s look.

I’ve paired my jeans with a orange cardigan (for any OSU fans out there.)

On the right I am showing my ‘before look’ with a baggy pair of faded jeans, Uggs and the sweater buttoned up.

On the left I have replaced the faded jeans with my skinny dark jeans, unbuttoned my sweater and added this gorgeous floral scarf. I’ve also replaced the Uggs with my leopard flats. All in all, it’s a simple easy style for everyday moms!

Update: I’ve slipped out of the top 10 for Tommy Blogs. I need 10 votes today! Please take a second and click on the link and vote for me. I really would appreciate it! Thanks!

Below are my dressing room pics from Goodwill- I apologize for the lighting and quality (I was using my phone).

Just remember, no matter what your figure is, there are jeans that look great on you, and those that don’t!  Take the time (and spend the money) to find amazing jeans that fit.

Jeans: Madewell, Shoes: Target, Sweater: Target, Scarf: J Crew (similar)

I don't think I even need to tell you how bad this looks- but I will. The rise (crotch) is way to long, my hips look big and the color is bad.

These make me look like I have saddlebags and the length is too short!

Feb 25th: Snow Day, Sort Of

It’s not really a snow day today- but we did have some freezing rain that has coated our roof and grass with a slushy/ snowy substance, so I decided it was time to break out my Sorels.

I bought these (on sale at REI) right after the last snow storm- but have yet to have the occasion to wear them. So as soon as I saw the weather I was excited to have an excuse to break them out.

I think they are a great alternative to Uggs, don’t you?

On the right I have on my faded mom jeans with an oversize sweater and my Uggs. I say this a lot, but there just isn’t anything interesting about this look. It’s lacking a focal point.

On the left I have replaced the faded mom jeans with my dark skinnys (Madewell) and then added a long sleeve black t shirt under my sweater. I think this gives the look more balance. Seeing my arms sticking out under this huge sweater (on the right) just doesn’t look right to me.

I’ve also added this amazing statement necklace that my sweet hubby brought home last night- just cause. I tell ya, he’s a keeper!

I love these boots, but they make my feet look HUGE!

By the way, I am only 10 votes away from moving into the top 10 for Top Mommy Blogs! Wow! Thanks everyone.

If you have time (and want to) click on the button top right that says ‘vote for us’. You can vote every day, and it’s just one simple and quick click. Thanks! 🙂

Quick note- I have resisted wearing this sweater for a long time because it had gotten covered if fuzzy’s (you know what I mean?) so today I decided to shave it.  I literally used my razor and shaved it, just like I’d shave my legs- and lo and behold the fuzzys came off! Wow! So simple. I just had to share!

Feb 24th, Spring Wish List

Now that I”m so into clothes, it’s tempting (but clearly not practical) to buy an entire new spring wardrobe. Being on a limited budget I made a list of my top 10 items for spring and I’ve done a little shopping…

Today I’m showing one of my new purchases, a yellow blazer. I have gotten really into blazers/ jackets this year. They are perfect for layering- and seem to add a little more polish than a simple cardigan.

Similar to yesterday’s blazer, this one is also jersey knit- so it is literally like a sweatshirt. Can’t get more comfy than that!

I’ve paired this with a blue and white striped shirt.  I can’t get enough of stripes! However, alone, they aren’t that exciting.

I’ve paired my blazer with straight leg jeans and wedge heels. This is a bit of a risk for me. I rarely wear heels with jeans like this, but thought it might be fun to try.

What do you think? Should I stick to flats? Or  for running errands my cute new Pumas would be perfect.

And by the way, do you want to see my list?

1. Bright grandpa style cardigan

2. Maxi dress

3. Something green (mint green is the color to have this spring)

4. Colored jeans

5. Skinny cargos

6. Sporty flats/ tennis shoes

7. Colored cropped pants

8. Yellow blazer

9. Colorful mini (either with a pattern or bright color)

10. Cute layering tanks/ shirts to wear under sweaters

What am I missing? What should I skip?

Of course, since it’s Friday I’ve linked up with my friends at Girlymama for Fashion Friday. Check it out!

Feb 22nd, It’s Going Around

Thank you so much for all the sweet comments from yesterday! I was so surprised and flattered that people took the time to write and tell me to feel better! Wow! What a supportive and great community this blogging world is!

Thank you!~

I am feeling so much better today, but unfortunately now my son has it. ARGH! I guess it’s going around- many of my neighbors said they have it too.

So- today’s outfit is not really what I am wearing- I’m actually still in my jammies- but I took a photo over the weekend of a potential outfit, so I thought I’d show it.

I’ve shown this picture on the right before- but it was a while ago, so I thought I could show it again. This was me- a year ago (before my style project!)

I see lots of moms wearing outfits like this- and while they will definitely stay dry- it’s not that stylish.

On the left I have re-created the same idea- jeans (or in this case black skinny jeans), boots, a waterproof jacket. I’ve gotten rid of these horrid pink rain boots and replaced them with my Frye’s. They technically aren’t rainboots- but  I sprayed on a treatment  so that they are water repellent, and it’s not like I’m going to be standing in the rain.

My jacket isn’t technically a rain jacket either- but again- this outfit isn’t for a soccer game- this is for running errands- darting in and out of the car on a wet or gloomy day. Plus, isn’t that what umbrellas are for?

This jacket will keep me  warm and dry- and the style is much more current than the bright blue raincoat.  A nice snuggly warm turtleneck also helps keep me toasty.

It’s got the ‘rocker chic’ vibe to it, which I’ve discovered is my alter ego! Who knew?

Have a great day and stay healthy! As my mom always says- ‘wash your hands often!’

As usual, it’s Wednesday, so I’ve hooked up with The Pleated Poppy!

*** 11:42 Outfit update! ***

I had to run to the store today to get some children’s Tylonal so I had to take off my jammies and  actually get dressed. I decided this Burberry rain jacket would be even better than the motorcycle style jacket I originally showed. This was a gift from my hubby a few years ago. I love it, it is a classic look that will never go out of style.

This Burberry raincoat is a more stylish alternative than the blue rain jacket!

Dec 26th, 30 for 30- Day 26

I’ll be honest, I am looking forward to the end of this Challenge. I’m getting a little tired of these same clothes- and I bet you are too!

Today I’m wearing my skinny jeans (they look black in the photo, but they are actually blue denim). I’ve paired my jeans with this bluish/ grey sweater with the asymetrical hemline. To add a little color and style- I’m wearing this gorgeous silk scarf.

I’m wearing it ‘rock star’ style, (a name I just made up) but it kind of reminds me of Steven Tyler a bit. Not that I want to look like Steven Tyler… at least I don’t think I do?!

As for my shoes, I’m wearing these steel grey wedged heels. It’s a different look for me- normally I wear either ballet flats or boots with skinny jeans- but I decided to try something new. What do you think? Hit or miss?

I love the orange in this scarf! Such an upbeat color!

Nov 7th, Frilly and Fun

Have you noticed that I tend to wear skirts or dresses on Monday? I guess after a casual weekend, I’m ready to look dressed up again.
Plus, I say this each time, but it’s true- I think they are so comfortable.

Especially today’s choice. Maybe it’s because I think it’s actually a nightgown. I’m not positive, but I did buy it in the pajama section at Anthropologie! Oh well… I guess my secret’s out!

One thing in particular that drew me to this dress is this frilly skirt part. Every time I wear it people actually ask if they can pet me! Seriously! I don’t blame them though- the texture is so fun!

On the right I’m showing how this dress looks all alone. It’s cute, but it actually does look like it needs more.

On the left I’ve added a bright pink cardigan and a necklace. Paired with tights and my black boots- I now have a complete and extremely comfy outfit. Have a great Monday!

This hot pink is one of the trendy colors of the season. Plus, it brightens up a gray outfit!

Oct 20, Burst of Color

Looking over my last few posts- there is definitely a common theme- I like neutrals, a lot!  I’m not sure why I’m so afraid of color, it’s not like I’m a shy person!

However, now that the days are turning grayer and grayer- I feel the need to bring a little burst of color into my wardrobe!

Until this style experiment, this (on the right) was my daily uniform; a white t shirt, jeans, cardigan and mom shoes. Boring- but safe!

Nothing wrong with a white t shirt, it just doesn’t have much personality. With the right accessories, it can definitely stand alone (as in what I wore yesterday), but today I want more! I am always a fan of stripes- so this shirt seemed like the perfect fit.

I’m also trying to find alternatives to my skinny jeans (did you notice I haven’t worn them once this week?!) These gray skinny cords are a nice change.   Throw on a necklace and change into cuter shoes (can’t go wrong with Tory Burch flats) and I’m all set.

By keeping the colors of this outfit limited to only 3 colors- it is not too busy!
