I have to say I have the BEST friends in the world- and I am so grateful for them. Yesterday, to keep my mind off my son being 2000 miles away, my friends Alice, Annie and Christy planned a girls day out of tennis, lunch & shopping. This is what I wore!
I started off with this cute grey maxi dress that I found at Marshalls for $20.
I love a maxi dress. It’s such an easy and comfy outfit- but a little plain on it’s own. So, I swapped out my flip flops for my cute snakeskin sandals. I then threw on my denim jacket (rolled the sleeves of course) and added a cute long necklace with a turquoise stone.
Have you noticed I’ve been finding some great stuff at Marshalls lately? I love that store! The key is going often and being very particular. I know what brands I like- and I study what is currently trending- and then see what I can find. Some days I walk away empty handed- and that’s ok!
My jacket is from Target (similar), the shoes are old and from Clarks, but here are some similar ones. The dress is Marshalls, but Here is a similar one I found on Amazon!
I bought this striped maxi dress a few years ago- but I rarely wear it, because I don’t love the way it looks on my curvy body! But, it’s going to be a hot day today, so I thought I’d see if I could make some small changes to the way it looks.
I decided to tie a white tank over the dress. This breaks up the stripes while creating the illusion of a skirt and top. Without the tank the dress is unflattering, all those stripes across my tummy area are not doing me any favors. But by tying the tank- I have created a waist, and broken up all the stripes. Adding the long necklace also helps break up the solid tank. By also tying the bottom of the dress, I have a cohesive look that is super relaxed, easy and fun to wear! Enjoy your day!
A friend of mine (and loyal reader!), Marilyn, recently wrote asking what to pack for a 2 week trip to Europe- so this post is for her- and for anyone else who might be traveling this summer.
My suggestion is to pack as light as possible, especially if you are moving from place to place. When we went, we did 2 different cities, and even that was a pain! I brought my enormous suitcase- and believe me I regretted it every day. Dragging in on the metro was a pain, then dragging it on the old and bumpy streets was a pain, and to top it off, the Air B&B we rented was on the 5th floor of a very old building with no elevator and a teeny tiny winding staircase and it was almost impossible to get that damn suitcase up the stairs! Plus, I didn’t need most of the clothes I brought!
So… my ideal packing list is as follows:
Tops- Black tank (or t shirt), White tank (or t shirt), Striped tank, 1 or 2 patterned tops, chambray shirt, solid sweater
Jackets- Bomber jacket or Denim jacket, Utility style Jacket with pockets and hood
Bottoms- Dark wash jeans, Black Jeans, skirt, black dress
Shoes– sporty tennis shoes, brown leather comfy sandals, black sandals . Make sure your shoes are SUPER comfortable. You may walk 10 miles a day!
Purses– 1 cross body bag
Scarves– 2 scarves (I brought 1, and then bought one there! Which made for a fun souvenir)
Hat– 1 baseball hat
Jammies– leggings (that could be worn in the day in a pinch) + tank or t shirt
Socks– If you want to wear socks with your tennis shoes, I would suggest bringing no show Smart Wool socks. They are my favorite!
** Bring slip shorts to wear under skirt and dress to prevent chafing
Dark jeans + striped top + sweater + tennis shoes
Dark jeans + printed top + utility Jacket + tennis shoes
Dark jeans + white tank + scarf + sandals
Dark jeans + black tank + bomber jacket + black sandals
Black jeans + black tank + denim shirt + statement necklace
Black jeans + printed top + sandals
Black jeans + white tank + bomber jacket + scarf
Skirt + striped tank + utility Jacket + tennis shoes
Skirt + white tank + denim shirt + leather sandals
Skirt + white tank + scarf + sweater
Black Dress alone
Black Dress with denim jacket, hat and tennis shoes
Black dress with scarf
I’m sure you could come up with even more combos than I show here
The idea is to chose basic colors that work well together- then add a few fun prints in to mix things up a bit.
You may also want to bring a pair of black shorts in case it is warm! Keep in mind that very few places in Europe have air conditioning, but depending on what time of year you go this may not be a problem. We went to London and Paris in late June and July, and it was actually very pleasant, low 70’s. Also, a bathing suit is probably not necessary, depending on where you are going- and unless you know your hotel has a pool.
Another idea is instead of the cross body bag, is to consider a backpack. I used one when we went to Europe, and I could throw my coat and/or scarf in there in case I needed it, plus it held snacks, my map, guidebook, bottle of water… you name it. Yes, I looked like a tourist, but so what!
Lastly, remember to wear your bulkiest clothes on the plane!
Have a fabulous trip- and let me know if you have any suggestions that I may have missed. I love hearing good ideas for traveling light! Even though we aren’t headed to Europe this summer, I am headed to Kansas for 2 weeks and would love to hear your tips!
In today’s OOTD I started with my white jeans and added this cute patterned tank. I love the design down the front- and think that the contrast of the dark top and the white jeans works well. I know I’ll be cold this morning, so I need to layer. I could wear this grey cardigan, but to me- this is too basic, and a little frumpy. Instead, I’ll wear my green tencil bomber. If you’re a regular reader, you are probably aware of how much I love this green bomber jacket. It’s just such a comfortable, versatile and easy to wear piece! I’ll also roll up my jeans a little to show some skin, and I’ll finish the outfit with my brown leather braided sandals. A big improvement over the original look, huh?!
As I mentioned yesterday, I’m off on another trip today, this time I’m heading to Vegas for the National Charity League national conference. For my plane journey, I’m wearing black jeans (as I did on my last trip), but this time I am pairing them with a cute v neck grey t shirt and my denim jacket. In the before photo I am wearing black joggers and a dark denim jacket. As much as I love those joggers- I will wear black jeans instead, since I want to pack light and can wear the jeans multiple times. I also plan on wearing the denim jacket a couple of times, and I like the faded denim better than the dark wash. Rolling the sleeve of the denim jacket gives the outfit a casual vibe.
The grey shirt with the deeper v neck is more flattering than the white one on the left where the neckline is too high.
I’m also wearing slip on loafers- easy for going through security! Lastly, I will most definitely add a scarf- see photo below. The last trip I went on, I used my scarf almost every single day. It was so much colder than I thought it would be. Hopefully Vegas will be a bit warmer, but it’s always a good idea to keep a scarf in your bag for over air conditioned restaurants or hotel conference rooms! This faux Burberry scarf is a great piece! It looks classy and can be draped over my shoulders as a shawl, or wrapped around my neck as seen here- or if I’m really desperate, can be a swim suit coverup!
Happy Easter everyone! It’s supposed to be a gorgeous day here in the Pacific Northwest, so I’ve decided to wear a white dress to celebrate. Question is- which dress?
Because we are going out for brunch, I think I’ll chose the option on the right. This cute J Crew dress has a looser fit, making more room for all the delicious food I’ll be eating. I love the sleeves , plus how the eyelet changes below the waist. The neckline is also super cute.
The dress on the left is from Zara, and I love it for all it’s simplicity. This fit and flare style is a super flattering for people who are curvy and have wider hips (like me).
Both dresses look great with neutral wedges- keeping the focus only on the dress. If it’s chilly, I’ll throw on a cute jacket!
After a week of grey, black and army green- I decided I needed some color! Plus, I’m still feeling really exhausted from my trip and just need something super easy to wear to school today. Jeans and a sweatshirt is as easy as it gets!
I chose this bright pink/ purple sweatshirt and my cropped wide leg jeans. The sweatshirt on the right is a big improvement over the fleece in the before picture. My motto is that fleece is only for hiking, camping or anytime you are going to be outside and it is freezing cold. In my opinion, it is not a very fashionable look- but very practical for keeping warm!
Now, to be honest, I’m struggling a bit with my shoe choice. I know anything will be better than the grey orthopedic shoes on the left, but I’m not sure about the slip on loafers. They feel a little dressy with a sweatshirt. I think I will wear my white Superga tennis shoes instead- go for a more sporty look.
I also want to comment on wide leg jeans- be really careful that they don’t make you look wide all over. I tried some on at Target the other day- and the cut was so wide through the entire leg that they made me look enormous. This pair is nice because while lower part is wide, it is still fitted through the thigh. Also, if you are petite, try a heel or a wedge shoe. I’m 5’5, so I should be ok with a flat shoe.
Ok, gotta run and get to school. Monday after Spring Break is HARD!!!
My daughter and I are on Spring Break touring colleges, and today it’s supposed to be cold and rainy, so luckily I packed a sweater and my cute Burberry raincoat.
This raincoat was another purchase by my hubby (it was a birthday gift years ago.) I live in Seattle where a stylish raincoat is an absolute essential. If you don’t have one, consider treating yourself. It doesn’t have to be super expensive, but it should be something that has a little style to it. I see so many people in the Pacific Northwest wearing North Face black jackets (which I love), but it’s also nice to have a stylish raincoat. Plus, just looking at the photo above, it’s such an improvement over the big, bulky black jacket I have on.
The Burberry coat nips in at the waist, which gives me a little shape, plus the cute signature Burberry plaid peeking out at the cuffs adds some major style to the look. I’ve paired it with a cream colored sweater that I have (of course) tucked in. I packed 3 pairs jeans for my week long trip; the black ones from the plane, the light ones that I wore on Tuesday and these dark ones by Paige. A darker denim is a little dressier, and these will be perfect if we go out for a nice dinner. For my feet, I am wearing my cute black booties instead of my ugly Uggs. While I love those Uggs for warmth and comfort, they aren’t adding anything to the outfit.
While many of you are heading somewhere warm and exotic for Spring Break, my daughter and I are going to the midwest to look at colleges for the week. Today’s outfit is my airplane look.
I chose all black because I’m packing light and will need these jeans a few more times on my trip. Plus, black will hide any dirt and honestly, what’s more chic than all black? It’s such an easy base to make simple changes to for an all new look.
Today I added a scarf because I am always cold on airplanes, and a scarf is a great accessory to add style and warmth! I love this scarf because of it’s gorgeous colors, it’s generous size (nothing worse than a wimpy scarf) and I love the cute fringe along the edges. My hubby bought this for me years ago at Lucky. He’s a good shopper, I probably would never have picked this out on my own- but I have worn it so many times over the years.
These cute slip on tennis shoes are perfect for the airport where you have to take off your shoes for security. And don’t worry about my feet getting cold, I am wearing my Smart Wool socks.
I bought this striped top years ago, but rarely wore it because it always made me feel frumpy, but I couldn’t put my finger on why- until today!
Now looking at the photos, I think it’s the super wide stripe right around my tummy! I’ve always heard to avoid horizontal stripes because they make you look big- and here is evidence of that.
So, to fix that, I’ve done the half tuck. This breaks up the big stripe- and gives the top some movement. Pairing it with trendy joggers and cute peep toe booties completes the look. Now I don’t feel like a frumpy mom, I feel like a fashionista! (just kidding!) But it is better, right?
