Jan 10th, Black and White

Today I am participating in another challenge (gotta keep it fun, right?) This one is by a blog called “Everybody, Everywear” and they come up with a style idea and ask people to link up- today’s theme being dress in black and white.

It’s fun because it’s a great way to see a ton of really cool ideas- all in one place!

I actually love black and white- no surprise there, huh? And luckily, I just bought this adorable black and white checked blouse at J Crew.

I had a lot of fun seeing what I could style it with- and came up with a few options.

My first may seem eerily familiar, probably because I wore something similar (here)  last week! I’ve paired my dark skinny jeans with this blouse and then threw on a black cashmere v neck sweater. To keep it true to ‘everyday’ style, I’ve got on black ballet flats.

I love the pattern of the shirt peeking out beneath the sweater. Casual & cool

My next look is also good for everyday- this time I tried a long black cardigan- but switched things up a bit by adding a red necklace and red ballet flats. Love that little pop of color!

I love how the red shoes really stand out!

Last, I decided to try it with a jacket and a scarf. Sometimes I’ll be running errands all day- and will never even take my coat off- so it’s fun to have a cute jacket that is stylish as well as functional. This one is a raincoat- perfect for Seattle- and I got it at JC Penny- seriously! Not sure why I was even in JC Penny! LOL!

Again with the bright pop of color!

Dec 23rd, 30 for 30- Day 23

I wore this brown pencil skirt last Friday, but since I was on a plane all day, no one saw me.

I decided to wear it again, but this time I paired it with my denim shirt layered over a tank.

You can barely see it, but I’m wearing this gorgeous bracelet that my sister gave me for my birthday. I absolutely love it- and would wear it every day if I could!

Have a great Christmas Eve Eve… are you done with your shopping?  I’m going to a white elephant party tonight and need a gift. Any suggestions?

I love this bracelet! Thanks Kara!!
The lighting outside is so bad you can't see the pattern in this skirt.

Dec 8th, 30 for 30- Day 8

Yikes! I am running so late today! Having a puppy is like having a newborn- I was lucky to even get a shower. I was supposed to be volunteering at school 29 minutes ago!

I’m also feeling very ‘unfashionable’ today… I stood in my closet and looked at my 30 items of clothing and thought ‘why the heck am I doing this challenge?”

I’ll admit it’s a bit boring, but this is the best I could do!

When in doubt, throw on an orange scarf!

Skinny jeans, a long sweater and a scarf. Pretty simple...

Dec 3rd, 30 for 30 Day 3

Weekend wear! I’m planning on spending most of the day lounging around the house- so ideally I wouldn’t even get dressed- I’d hang out in jammies all day! Sounds heavenly.

But, my son has a basketball game, so that’s not going to work!

I decided to go with an outfit that feels as comfy as jammies- these cream cords are amazingly soft, stretchy and warm. Perfect!

On top I’ve put on this utlra comfy (loose fitting) striped shirt. To keep warm, and add a little color. I threw on my denim jacket.

As for my feet- I want to take a minute to answer a question a reader emailed! She also lives in Seattle and wondered if my feet get cold when I go without socks.

The truthful answer is that yes, if I’m outside my feet do get cold. But, when I know I’ll be mostly inside- I’m fine. Especially if the rest of me is warm!

So there you go… enjoy your weekend!

Oct 24th, Good Old J Crew!

I’ve titled this Good Old J Crew because I bought this skirt 2 years ago and it’s one of my favorites. I usually wear it all summer long- with a t shirt and sandals as seen on the right.

Today I decided to try and make this a fall/winter look by pairing it with tights and a black turtleneck. Typically turtlenecks can be really matronly- but with the short sleeves and paired with a mini- I think this works. The long necklace creates a v down the front of my body- which breaks up the solid black a bit and also draws the eye down- a good slimming trick.

To keep my legs warm, I’ve put on black tights and black menswear inspired shoes- this is all the rage this fall, and although I hate to be too trendy, I decided to give this look a try. I bought these at DSW and they are ultra comfy and I think they are super cute.

To keep the look current, I’ve created a small arm party with a group of silver stacked bracelets.

Hope you have a great Monday. Sorry for the delayed post- I had a rough morning. Two kids who both got up on the wrong side of the bed… it wasn’t pretty!

Oct 12th, Work it Wednesday

This blue and white striped shirt is such an easy piece to throw on with anything!
This is almost the opposite of the outfit on the left.

Can’t believe it’s already Wednesday! Once again, I’m participating in Work it Wednesday, where I show 1 article of clothing worn 3 ways. Today I’ve selected one of my favorite tops- my striped shirt from J Crew. Which I wore here.

In the picture on the left I’m wearing it with my boyfriend jeans, my new fur booties and my utility vest from Old Navy. A very casual and easy outfit. I’ve heard you are never supposed to wear horizontal stripes- because it makes you look wide- but paired with the vest, there is now a vertical line to break up the look.

On the right, I’ve taken the same concept and flipped it- putting the utility on bottom (cargo pants, rolled up to add style) and adding a denim jacket (sleeves rolled up to add personality). Again, the jacket acts as a vertical line to break up the stripes. I still have on booties, but a different pair that look a little better with these  pants.  Otherwise it is basically the same outfit in reverse.

Below I’m showing a 3rd look- Here I’ve paired the striped top with my dark skinny jeans, ballet flats and a grey cable knit oversize sweater. This is a little dressier look (the dark denim, flats and pearls), but the oversize sweater adds a casual element to it. Perfect for running around town in!

A huge rain storm blew in while we were taking these pictures, so it’s very dark and hard to see. I apologize!

Pardon the umbrella- it started pouring during my photos!

To be honest, I’m not sure which look I like the best- probably the one with the jeans- which is what I actually wore! Which one is your favorite? Please comment and let me know! I love hearing from my readers, it truly makes my day!!

I really love the easy casual look of this outfit. So me!

Sept 21st- Easy Does It

Easy changes make this a cute outfit!
Yes, I am standing weird- just wanted to give the full effect of how shapeless this was!

I’d been eyeing this striped dress from J Crew for a while now- (see picture at bottom
of page!) but it was too expensive for my budget (yes, I’m cheap!). I finally found a similar one on clearance at Sears (Lands End again!) and at first glance I passed it over. Here’s why: this is what it looked like when I tried it on (picture on the right!)

But, after careful thought- and a little trial and error- I decided to see if I could do some easy changes to make this more my style.

First off, I  added a cute brown leather braided belt. This cinches the dress- making the fit more flattering. Next I rolled the sleeves to the elbow- the original length was awkward. I also threw on my favorite orange scarf. I LOVE orange and blue together- they are such a great combo. Finally, I traded out my Birks for some cute wedge heels. My friend, Livi, said she hates wearing dresses because she never knows what shoes to wear. A cute wedge heel in a neutral color is almost always a good choice.

Since I’m participating in Work it Wednesday, (where we show 1 item 3 different ways- although in this case, example #1 is a definite Don’t!)) I’ll show another option!

If it’s too warm for a scarf- a cute necklace also works:

Even with just the necklace, it's still cute!
Have you noticed how much I love stripes!

Sept 13th, Down on the Farm

Striped shirt and jeans- an easy and cute outfit.
I'm calling foul for this look!

Today is my farm day- each Tuesday I head over to a local farm to pick up my
produce for the week. It’s a great way to support local farmers, and eat fresh fruits and veggies. During the summer I’d take my kids and they would enjoy picking the berries.

Since I’ll be out there doing the picking myself today- I need an outfit that will work. I chose comfy jeans and a striped top. I’m showing 2 versions of a striped top- one that works (in my opinion) and one that doesn’t. On the right my black and white striped shirt looks a little too much like a referee. I also don’t care for the large black cuffs and the fit is tight- and horizontal stripes already make people look wide- in a tight fit this can be made worse.

On the left I am wearing a cuter striped shirt. This one has a better fit, a cute boatneck and the stripes are further apart. I’ve rolled my jeans again- I seem to really like that look, and for shoes I went with ultra comfortable- ballet flats.

I decided to not wear any jewelry- do you think I should add a necklace? What’s missing?

I looked for several months to find a cute striped t shirt- now they are everywhere! This one is from J Crew.

August 28th, Easy and Comfortable Weekend Wear

One thing I’m learning about myself during this process is that I really like wearing skirts. I think they are so much more comfortable than shorts. And, in my opinion, shorts are very difficult to pull off. You really need to have very long and very skinny legs to look great in shorts. Since I am neither really tall or really skinny, I’ll stick to skirts. I know, I know, I did wear shorts a few weeks ago- and once in a while rules are meant to be broken, right?

I was in a hurry to get out the door today, so I put on my North Face skirt and a grey and white striped t-shirt. I added a necklace and my orange sandals for a little burst of color. Not the most exciting outfit- but it’s easy and comfortable.

Easy, breezy beautiful?!

August 16th, Summer Skirt and Top

Well, it’s finally feeling like summer here in Seattle! I know, the rest of the country has been sweltering and we have only broken 80 degrees twice. Today may be the third day! Whoo hoo! For my summer outfit I threw on a comfy skirt, t shirt and my Birkenstocks. Seriously! I wore these daily until my 3 year old niece told me they look like grandpa shoes. When a 3 year old has more fashion sense than a 40 year old it’s time to worry! So, I have abandoned my Birks (I still wear them around the house- they are so comfortable) and switched to my new favorite sandal- from Target. You may remember them, I wore the orange ones the other day. They were so cute and so cheap I bought 3 pairs- black, tan and orange.

Here is my before outfit. I honestly don’t think this is so bad. What do you think? Too boring?

comfy skirt, cute t shirt with ruffle and my Birks!

I decided to add a little color and style to this outfit by switching out my grey skirt for a cute patterned one from J Crew. I also added a necklace and as previously mentioned- changed my shoes. Is this better? I wonder if the pouf in this skirt actually makes me look too hippy. The before skirt seems more slimming.
