Feb 5th, Running Errands

DSCN6501DSCN6502Hey friends! I’m actually feeling a tiny bit better today- whoot hoot!

I’m not up for running errands, but I did decide that I’d actually take a shower, get dressed, take a quick photo and share it with you- then I’ll return to the couch to rest my back and watch another episode of Friday Night Lights (which has become my all time favorite show…)

To me, a typical ‘running errands’ outfit consists of jeans, a top, a cardigan and flat shoes. That being said it would be really easy to just go with the outfit on the right.

However, it’s also really easy to make a few minor changes- and yet have a much cuter, more polished look- as seen on the left. Remember, I’m not claiming to be a fashion plate- or style expert- I’m just a mom who likes to put a tiny bit of effort into my outfit!

All I’ve done here is roll the hem of my jeans- replace the tennis shoes with ballet flats, and add a bright (neon) yellow silk blouse under my cardigan instead of the plain white tank. The old me would have thought a silk blouse it too dressy for a stay at home mom. But let me tell you, it’s not too dressy!  It adds a nice texture under the cardigan, is very forgiving (doesn’t cling to my mommy belly) and the bright yellow is very eye catching.

So simple- and yet much cuter.

Dec 11th, Ain’t No Mom Jeans

DSCN6238DSCN6239There is a great style blog called Ain’t No Mom Jeans– I love checking it out from time to time. It’s amazing how something  basic and simple as a pair of jeans can really change your look.

The jeans I am wearing on the right I bought at the Goodwill for a Halloween costume- but they are so bad, I decided to show them today so that you can see a side by side comparison of what a difference jeans can make.

It’s not helping that I tucked my tank in- but I wanted you to be able to see the 18 inch rise and the elastic waistband. That’s not all that’s bad though- the color is awful (acid wash is not my favorite) and the baggy- yet gathered at the ankle- style isn’t flattering. The one nice thing I can say about these jeans is that they were so comfy!!!

Luckily, the jeans on the left are also comfy- and a lot more stylish. The dark wash is much better- the cut is slimmer (but not too tight) and the slight flare at the ankle is a great alternative to the boot leg cut. Paired with pointy heels and this cute blazer- I’m ready for work!

If you haven’t already- do a personal jeans assessment. Are your jeans dated? When did you buy them? Are they still ‘in style’? If you think you need new ones- there are lots of great options in lots of price ranges. Shop around and try on lots and lots of different pairs/ styles/ brands…  My favorites are Madewell, CABi, Old Navy, James Jeans.

Nov 29, Three for Thursday- Fur Vest

I want to be cute and comfy today (I think I say that every day!). So I decided to go with my cream stretchy cords. They are so soft and so warm, perfect for a cold winter day. I love pairing black and cream together- it’s an easy, classic combination.

My first look on the right I have on a large, baggy black top. It’s not doing much for me- too loose, too boring.

On the left I have replaced it with this slimmer, long sleeve V neck black t shirt- and then to add warmth (and some style) I added my faux fur vest. To finish it off, I added a long pendant necklace that ties all the colors together. For my shoes I chose my desert booties. I can wear socks with these- so my feet are nice and toasty and the subtle color doesn’t distract from the rest of the outfit.

Now, being that it is Three for Thursday, I’ve decided to show you some other ways I’ve worn this faux fur vest. It’s a fun piece to have in your closet- a great little way to dress up an otherwise plain or boring outfit. Plus, it makes me so warm!

Nov 13th, Bold Stripes

As you all know I have an obsession with stripes! I just can’t get enough of them- and I apologize if you are getting bored with seeing me in stripes day after day…

Today I am wearing a blue and camel colored striped sweater. As you can see- the stripes on this sweater are much wider than I usually wear- and I will warn you that you have to be careful with stripes this wide- they can add bulk to your frame. That’s why I went with the skinny jeans- the contrast of large on top means the bottom must be small. It’s all about balance.

On the right I have left the sweater all alone- and simply paired it with skinny jeans and flats. I think this works- its plain, simple, yet I like it.

On the left I have added a light blue oxford shirt under the sweater, and then also switched out the ballet flats for my ever present Target brown boots! By adding the shirt underneath I have added a layer of interest- and warmth. I like the shirt tails peeking out under the sweater- and I love the boots because I can wear socks and my feet will be toasty warm all day!

Which do you like better?!

Sept 20th, Sending a Message

My typical ‘go to’ outfit for days when I’m not working is jeans and a shirt.

Before Everyday Mom Style I would have worn the outfit on the right.

It is just so easy to throw on a shirt, jeans and my Birkenstocks and call it good- however, there is nothing appealing about this outfit and the message that I am sending is ‘I take no time for myself’.

Is that the message you want to send?

Not me! I want to look somewhat pulled together, somewhat stylish, somewhat like I care!

Hence- the outfit on the left! This is as comfortable as the outfit on the right- but it is so much cuter. The blue and white striped tank is more interesting than a solid shirt, and the bright cardigan gives the outfit a pop of color. The cuffed jeans are casual- yet look a little more stylish than the ‘before’ pair . As for my shoes- anything is better than my Birkenstocks- and we all know how much I love my Puma ballet flats!

I wore this to dinner last night at our new local pizza place- and I only had time for 1 photo, sorry!

Sept 10th, Dinner With Friends

When you get invited to a friend’s house for dinner do you struggle with what to wear? I do!

You don’t want to be too dressy, but you don’t want to look like a slob either.

It’s so hard to get it right!

I wore this outfit to a friend’s house last weekend- and I thought it was pretty cute- with the exception of the shoes.

Don’t get me wrong- I really love these shoes- but for the occasion they seemed a little off. Most of the gals were wearing strappy sandals- and having closed toe shoes on felt a little too wintery, but oh well- what can you do?

Just for fun, let’s compare outfits on the right and left- and why the outfit on the right, although similar, doesn’t quite work.

Start with the cardigan- I bought this at Nordstrom’s a few years ago- at the insistence of the sales gal- and I have regretted it ever since. It just seems so ‘old lady-ish’ to me. The collar hangs funny and seems droopy.

The jeans are too long (see how the gather at my ankles) and the light blue color isn’t right for evening. The plain black flats are boring.

As for the left- I switched out the cardigan for this fun blazer. It provides the same warmth as a cardigan, but appears so much more polished. The dark cropped jeans are also more trendy and stylish. Lastly, my shoes- I opted for these cute snakeskin pointy toed heels. Lke I said before- I LOVE these shoes, but am not sure they were the best choice for a summer evening event. I would definitely wear this to work though!

This pale pink shell looks nice under the white blazer.

March 7th- Jeans at Work!

Even though I’m working today- I’ve chosen to wear jeans. Depending on the atmosphere of your office, sometimes jeans can be appropriate.

For my job (marketing), these jeans work since they look like dress pants. The fit is not too tight, the wash is very dark and I can wear them with heels (which dresses them up a bit).

On the right I’m showing them paired with this matronly buttoned up cardigan (don’t get me wrong, I’ve actually worn this with other outfits and liked it- but here it just is too plain). Plus, I have on these boring black square toed boots. Blah!

On the left I have replaced the boots with my pointy toed snakeskin heels. I am not planning on doing much walking today, and most of my morning will be spent sitting indoors, so I’ve decided to go with heels.

For my top I have on this loose white tank and this pretty, gold shimmery jacket that I love! I bought this at JC Penny, and I think it is really cool. I always love dressing in 3’s and so paired with the tank and the necklace, I think it completes the look.

It’s Wednesday, so I’ve hooked up with The Pleated Poppy! Also, don’t forget to vote by clicking on the link above right! (every vote counts! I’m 2 votes away from the #8 spot!) Thanks!

The jacket gives the outfit a more professional look- perfect for work! Looking at the photos, I wish my necklace hung down a little lower. I'm going to switch this one out for a longer pendant.

March 4, All About the Footwear

One of the most common questions I get from readers is ‘don’t your feet get cold in ballet flats?’.

The simple answer is ‘it depends’.

As long as I am going to be indoors most of the day, then my feet are fine in flats. If I’m going to be in and out a lot, then my feet definitely get cold, and I am much happier in my boots.

So, that being said- this outfit was designed around my shoes.

To be honest, most mornings that is how I plan my outfit. I think to myself; ‘What is my plan for today? Where will I be? What am I doing?” and then I go from there.

If I’m going to be on my feet all day- definitely flats, if I’m just going to work and will be sitting at my desk- I’ll wear heels, if it’s cold- boots with socks.

Last winter I wore my black boots almost everyday. This year I’ve been trying to change things up.

The one shoe I am trying to avoid are my ugly Uggs. Yes, they are warm and comfy- and if you ask the moms at the school bus stop- they will tell you that occasionally I will have them on- gasp! It’s early and they are easy to slip on, but as soon as I get home, shower and get dressed I chose a cuter shoe.

Now for my outfit today- on the right I am wearing head to toe blue- which I just said on Friday is a great way for petite gals to look taller- but in this case, it’s too boring and isn’t very flattering.

On the left I’ve switched out the Uggs for my brown boots and traded my blue button down for this cute grey and blue striped turtleneck. To add some style and warmth I’ve thrown on my brown leather jacket. It’s an easy and stylish way to keep warm while running errands.

I know, you don't even have to say it- these jeans are to baggy around the knee.

Feb 13th, Shopping With Mom

My mom and I are leaving the kids with Grandpa today and heading out for some retail therapy. I’ve decided to dress in something easy to shop in, like jeans a tank and a jacket.

However, the outfit on the right just doesn’t quite work. While it is easy and comfy, there’s nothing stylish about it. Why not go for something more polished and fashionable?

On the left I am wearing my cropped jeans, a loose tank and a blue blazer. I’ve added this cute necklace (yes, I wore it the other day- I have a feeling you’ll be seeing this one a lot) and cute flats to finish off the outfit.

I’m still comfy- yet the overall look is so much cuter!

As a reminder, I now have a Facebook page, click on the link to the right to ‘like’ me. Also- thanks for all the votes for Top Mommy Blogs! I am so thrilled that you all have voted for me. Thanks! Just one simple click- that’s all you have to do!

Ps- I’ve linked up with Glamamom for Monday Mingle, full of fun fashion ideas! 🙂

This is the same idea, but with longer jeans and a different necklace.

Another option is a scarf!

I love that if it gets warm I can remove the blazer and still look cute.

Feb 9th, Just Jeans and a Sweater

 After wearing a dress yesterday,
today I’ve decided to go with jeans. If you are regular reader you’ll know I’m a huge fan of jeans- especially my skinny jeans- but sometimes I want something a little looser.

Introducing the ‘sort of’ skinny jeans.

These are similar to my Madewell Skinnys, but not quite as tight. They are a perfect alternative to anyone who is not ready for the super tight skinnys. The straight leg is still slimming, but they don’t look painted on. Since my sweater doesn’t cover my bum- this is important!

I’ve paired them with a simple brown sweater. On the right I have on mom jeans and a buttoned up cardigan and tennis shoes. This look just sort of seems blah. I wouldn’t look twice at me!

On the left I’ve re-worked it by switching out the matronly cardigan for this cute sweater with these fun sleeves and detailed pattern. I’ve also added a necklace and replaced the tennis shoes with these cute leopard flats.

My goal isn’t too look like I just came off the runway, my goal is to look like someone who has put a little effort into her look- and I think this does.

This sweater is much more interesting than the boring cardigan.

By the way, I’ve started a Facebook page, if you’re interested, click here!

Don’t forget to click the ‘Vote for Us’ button on the right. You can do it every day to keep my blog in the top 50 at Top Mommy Blogs. Thanks so much!! 🙂
