April 17th, The Power of 3

I really love this bright silk shell that I’m wearing today. It’s such a fun, pretty color and perfect for spring.

Originally I thought I’d wear it with skinny jeans.

But then remembered I have a few appointments for work today, so I decided to dress it up a bit by wearing trousers instead.

If you are a regular reader, you will recognize that a common theme for me is to do things in 3’s.

I’ve talked before about my ‘rule of 3’- which means I like to have 3 parts to my outfit (usually it’s a shirt, cardigan/ jacket & necklace).

I also like to keep the colors in my outfit limited to 3- anything more and it feels a bit crazy.

That being said- on the right I did add a 4th color in-  the red shoes, but it is in such a small dose, I think it’s ok.

On the left my shoes are snakeskin heels- which count as a neutral.

Comparing the two looks, I like the longer necklace on the left- it helps draw the eye down- and connects the top to the bottom.

I also realize that my wrists look so bare without any jewelry- but I sit and type all day at work- and can’t do it with bracelets banging against the keyboards. If I were going out on a date or to lunch – I would definitely add something.

This outfit feels very appropriate for spring with the light pants and the bright top.
I'm trying the celebrity trick of crossing my legs to look thinner. However, it just seems to make me look very awkward!

In both outfits I think I need a belt. Something neutral… time to go shopping!

Nov 16th, Working Mom

I feel very blessed because I get to be a stay at home mom and a working mom. By working part time- and often from home- I am able to put the kids on the school bus in the mornings, and then collect them from the bus after school.

Hence, some days I’m dressed like a mom out running errands, and then other days I’m dressed more professionally. I think it’s good to get to see both looks- even if you can’t always relate.

Today’s look is a ‘work outfit’. Instead of always wearing black pants I am really trying to expand my options, so today I’m wearing grey trousers. I’m not a huge fan of trousers- they can very easily look very dated- but paired with a trendy top, cool jewelry and good shoes, you can make it work.

On the right you can see how they don’t work. My shoe heel is too low, so the pants look like they are too big. Also, my top is enormous- thus, I look enormous.

On the left I changed my shirt to a more fitted and flattering style. It’s similar to the one on the right, but it’s gathered around the tummy which is nice for hiding any bulge!  I’ve also added a chunky necklace and switched shoes with a higher heel. I’ve also changed out the trousers- instead of the plain grey flannel, I’m wearing these grey with a tiny pattern- it’s very subtle, yet adds some interest.

All pretty simple changes- yet they make a big difference.

Now, off to work!

I will definitely be putting on a coat- it's cold out here! But, for my heated office, a short sleeve top will work.
A close up of the ruching...
This shoe is perfect with these trousers! Just peeking out under the hem gives a hint of style.

One more thing, I’m linking up to What I Wore Wednesday and Work It Wednesday, so be sure to go check out those sites as well!

Nov 10th, Backwards?

Due to the buttons down the back, the last time I wore this sweater I had a few people comment (probably jokingly) “I think you’re wearing your sweater backwards”.

I can assure you, it is not on backwards! I swear!

I fell in love with this sweater the moment I saw it- I love the camel color, the 3/4 sleeves, the cropped cut and the way it just looks like Fall. For some odd reason, it reminds me of Love Story- although Ali McGraw probably wore nothing like it.

Anyhow- today I am pairing this sweater with my off white pants. I decided to keep this look very simple- very understated.

By keeping each piece of this outfit in the same color family, it looks classy and expensive (which it isn’t!).

To add a bit of my personality, I’ve chosen my leopard heels, an animal print bracelet and this cute necklace from Forever 21.

For a totally unexpected twist, I'm using my black purse again.
