July 12, Denim Shorts

It finally feels more like summer here in the PNW, so today I am wearing denim shorts and a white top.

My before outfit is perfectly fine- cut off shorts, a white t shirt and white Birkenstocks, but isn’t the outfit on the right a little cuter?

I swapped out the denim shorts for a more tailored pair and replaced the t shirt with a white cotton shirt with cute blue detail on the collar and flutter sleeves. My white slides are a perfect finish to an easy summer outfit.

T shirt is from TJ Maxx

June 21, Sisters

I feel so blessed to have 2 amazing sisters. I honestly consider them to be my best friends! Unfortunately, they both live far away (in Kansas City) so I only get to see them about 4 or 5 times year. This week, my little sister is visiting to help celebrate my son’s graduation and my daughter’s 16th birthday, so I thought I’d post a sister’s photo.

My little sister is very stylish- she totally inspires me! She has a very classic, polished look- and isn’t afraid to spend a lot on clothes (unlike me- who is a cheapskate!)

Here she is wearing white on white- which can be hard to pull off, but she makes it work by choosing stylish white jeans with a frayed hem and a cute white cotton t-shirt with a ruffle detail on the sleeves. By tucking the shirt in and revealing the cute brown belt she breaks up the white and keeps her outfit from looking too plain. To add a little more interest & fun, she choose cute leopard slides and added some jewelry.

As for me, I’ve chosen my dark skinny jeans and paired them with a cute floral blouse. I NEVER wear floral, so this is a stretch for me, but I think it looks feminine and sweet. I’ve been looking for a floral top for a while, and found this cute one at Nordstrom Rack the other day, and I really like it!

To complete my outfit, I chose my block heel slides and added a couple of bracelets.

Happy Friday everyone!

March 5, Black Joggers

My OOTD is what I’m wearing today to go get my physical. I realized it had been over 3 years since I’d had one, so today’s the big day. Sorry for over-sharing, but it’s important to take care of your health. In order to be comfy and casual, I’ve chosen black joggers, a white shirt and a denim jacket.

In my before look, my white v neck shirt is too high, the denim jacket is too dark with the black joggers and I need to show a little skin at the ankle. In my after look, I pushed up my pant legs a little, swapped out the blue tennis shoes for grey/ black slip ons and replaced the white shirt with a cuter version that has a deeper v neck. I traded the dark denim jacket for this lighter version and rolled the sleeves up a bit. It’s the same basic outfit – just a cuter/ better version.

Notice the cute detailing at the shoulders.

Feb 16, Classic White Top

Jeans and a white shirt are another classic outfit. But you need more than just a logo t shirt and jeans to have a stylish look. A cute, faux silk top is more flattering and stylish. Take this one from Nordstrom Rack, it’s actually polyester, so it’s machine washable- which is essential for moms. Tuck it in a little, add a belt & cardigan sweater, and a cute necklace to give it a little interest. Finish the outfit with some fun sandals instead of flip flops (remember I’m in the desert!) and I’m ready for today’s adventure- the famous street fair!

April 13th, Cheap Thrill

Let me tell you a little story about a mom who wandered into a consignment shop and found a cheap thrill!

My son was getting his hair cut the other day- and lo and behold right next door was a consignment shop, so of course I had to go in and explore.

Let me tell you- it was SO MUCH FUN!

I’ve always been a fan of bargains- and love finding something on sale, but I never imagined the thrill I would get in a re-sale shop!

Who knew?

Yes, it smelled a little funny in there.

Yes, there were a lot of awful clothes.

Yes, I felt a little weird looking at other people’s discards.

But- there were also some great finds and great prices- including this fun little vest I’m wearing today.

Now, here’s the weird part.

Just the other day I was at an intersection and saw a cute gal walking by. She had on workout pants, a t shirt and the coolest vest.

I wondered where she got it- I thought it was so unique and so interesting.

I walked into the consignment shop and the first thing I find- I swear- is this vest.

It is almost the exact same vest as the one I saw!  It was fate!

And it was only $12!!

I brought it home, washed it in hot water (twice) and now here it is, complimenting a white V neck shirt and paired with red jeans. It adds so much interest to what otherwise would have been a boring outfit (as seen on the right).

The morale of the story is- if you are wanting to re-fresh your wardrobe, and don’t want to spend a fortune- consider checking out your local consignment store. You may be surprised by what you find.

A piece of advice, go with an idea in mind of what you are looking for- and it’s ok to leave empty handed. The thrill is in the hunt!

And for a good laugh, check out this post on jeans I found at the Goodwill! It shows some really bad Mom jeans!

This vest was meant to be mine!

These pockets are perfectly placed!

March 25th, So Simple

One thing I’ve learned in this ‘fashion journey’ is how a very simple outfit can either look stylish or not- depending on small details.

A good example of that is today’s outfit.  I’ve paired blue jeans with a white t shirt and a black cardigan.

But- as you can see on the right, this outfit is awful.

The loose, baggy jeans are too long (see how they puddle around my ankles). The white t shirt has a neckline that is too high- and the cardigan looks awkward (the neckline is so much lower than the t shirt). And to be honest, the outfit is just a little too boring.

On the left I have replaced the baggy jeans with these cute slim and cropped ones (Old Navy, Diva style)

I’ve switched out the cardigan for this longer, short sleeve one and then added a scarf to add interest and color to the outfit. Now my outfit has a focal point.

For my shoes, instead of the ugly black Sketchers (on the right), I’ve got on cute black ballet flats.

Simple little changes that make a big difference! Enjoy your weekend. The sun in shining in Seattle today! Thank you Mother Nature!

I love this faux Burberry scarf!
